Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
