New research reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
